When we pray with the Bible, our prayer becomes a dialogue. God speaks to us through his Word and we listen/respond.

In Bible study, it's helpful to read the same passage in various Bible translations.

Note: The Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition (RSVCE) is the Bible version used in the Catechism of the Catholic Church and The New American Bible Revised Edition (NABRE) is the closest translation to that used for Mass. A revision of the NABRE is coming out soon called The Catholic Amerian Bible (CAB). This translation will be used in the Mass and is also intended for study, catechesis, and personal devotion.

The Catholic American Bible (CAB) establishes a unified Scripture text approved for:

  • Proclamation at Mass, in a forthcoming new Lectionary
  • The Liturgy of the Hours, in the upcoming Second Edition
  • Private prayer and study, in editions available beginning Ash Wednesday, February 10, 2027

    The CAB includes:

    • A modified version of the Old Testament from the NABRE
    • The Abbey Psalms and Canticles as the source for the Book of Psalms
    • A newly revised New Testament
    • Updated introductions and notes
    • Appendices including the Abbey Psalms and Canticles

Together, these elements form a single text approved for liturgical and devotional use in the United States.

The Bible: The Living Word of God or a Dead Book?  video by Matthew Phelps

Turning to God’s Word offers an approach to Catholic Bible study refined over the course of many years. We seek not only to help develop understanding about how Scripture enlightens and shapes the Catholic faith, we also seek to open dialogue between the participants and the living Word of God. This approach is rooted in the centuries-old Catholic method of reading and studying the Bible and is known as lectio divina. It relies on the assumption that truly to engage with and understand the living Word of God, one must read and focus directly on the Bible rather than relying on intermediary explanations and commentaries. It’s our sincere hope that by providing a gateway to lectio divina, Turning to God’s Word will help readers to find a more engaging and dynamic approach to encountering Jesus Christ in the revealed Word of God.
